This
collaborative project is studying the feasibility and effectiveness
of marine protected areas for highly-mobile marine vertebrates in the
Alborán Sea,
a dynamic pelagic ecosystem in the Western Mediterranean.
This region has been identified as a candidate for
'special area of conservation' (SAC) and 'important bird area' (IBA)
designation due to the occurrence of protected seabirds, cetaceans and
turtles.
These
marine vertebrates share the Alborán Sea with many human activities
including recreation, shipping, military exercises and fisheries.
